Alessi Smart Coffee Machine
Context Challenge proposed to us by Alessi: “how might we help the company to rethink a new coffee machine for the home environment that emphasizes the ritual of making coffee through a poetic-functional and applying the IOT principles? “
Goal Our proposal is to make a coffee machine and an app with services to improve the well-being through sustainability, with the aim of making them aware of their daily actions through new gestures, materials and functions.
My Role I designed the gesture on the coffee machine, the layout, the graphics of the app and the simulation.
Prototyping
At this stage we made a quick prototype to realize the user’s experience while using the touch screen. It was important for us to understand with which actions the hands covered the screen and which did not. In fact, we abandoned rotation (left photo) for the right finger slider. (right photo)

Color palette
For coordinated image of Fonte we decided to use Alessi’s iconic red but giving it a higher component of earth. What we wanted is to emphasize the closeness to nature, to materiality, to earth.
Gesture
Interaction consists of two gestures: swiping your finger around the external crown (to set quantity) and a simple tap on the touch screen. (to confirm your chooses)

The smart app allows you to prepare coffee remotely, and also control all your smart Alessi devices. It is possible to see which appliance consumes more and in which time slot, and manage the automatic shutdown.
